About LakeLife

An initiative of Powai Lake Rejuvenation Forum
LakeLife is a community wellness and environmental engagement platform, starting with residents around Powai Lake, Mumbai.
We connect three goals: personal wellness through walking, jogging, cycling, yoga and outdoor time; community participation through shared activities; and lake conservation through awareness, reporting and volunteer cleanups.
This is an early MVP. Sample events and demonstration statistics are clearly labelled until real community contributions take their place.
Powai Lake Rejuvenation Forum
A citizen scientists' initiative
The Forum's mission is to restore Mumbai's iconic freshwater ecosystem through science-driven action, community engagement and a comprehensive 12-point rejuvenation program. Powai Lake, bordered by the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, IIT Bombay and Hiranandani Gardens, was once a backup source of drinking water and home to native fish, migratory birds and marsh crocodiles.
Conservation work
The NGT case, and the scientific studies GreenYatra and partner organisations are carrying out to guide restoration.
Bringing the lake's condition to the NGT
Dr. Rakesh Bakshi's petition to the National Green Tribunal highlighted untreated sewage, invasive vegetation and decades of neglect. In July 2025 the NGT constituted a Joint Committee of CPCB, MPCB and the Maharashtra State Wetland Authority, which recommended a 12-point rejuvenation program.
Water & silt testing
Laboratory analysis of water and silt samples (BOD, COD, dissolved oxygen, pH, heavy metals, microbial load) to build a scientific baseline for restoration.
GIS data mapping
Geo-referencing test results on detailed maps to show pollution hotspots, silt distribution and water-quality gradients.
Bathymetric survey
Mapping the lake bed and water depths to measure sediment build-up and plan targeted desilting.
Biodiversity census
Cataloguing fish, marsh crocodiles, resident and migratory birds, amphibians, insects and aquatic plants.
LakeLife supports the program's community engagement goals — cleanup drives, awareness and citizen participation.
